A New Chapter of Seaside Park Just in Time for Summer

A historic annexation is reshaping the Jersey Shore, uniting communities and opening a new chapter for Seaside Park just ahead of summer!

2 Jersey Shore Towns Become 1: What It Means for Seaside Park

After more than a decade of legal battles, a major shift has officially taken place along the Jersey Shore, reshaping the future of the barrier island community.

As of April 2026, South Seaside Park has officially separated from Berkeley Township and has been annexed into the borough of Seaside Park. What was once divided is now unified, creating one cohesive shoreline community.

A Long Time Coming

This transition did not happen overnight. For over 11 years, residents of South Seaside Park pursued secession, citing a disconnect from Berkeley Township services and a stronger alignment with Seaside Park.

The case ultimately reached the New Jersey Supreme Court, which upheld a lower court ruling allowing the annexation to move forward. From there, it became a matter of the Seaside Park council, on behalf of its residents, formally accepting and integrating the change, bringing closure to a long and complex process.

Why Residents Pushed for the Change

At the heart of this shift was a desire for accessibility and alignment with everyday life. For residents of South Seaside Park, their municipal hub, borough hall in Berkeley Township, was roughly 13 miles away, creating a disconnect when it came to services and representation.

At the same time, many residents were already naturally integrated into the Seaside Park community, utilizing local resources such as police and fire services. With Seaside Park just steps away, the transition reflects how residents were already living day to day.

Combined with the fact that South Seaside Park contributed an estimated 10 percent of Berkeley Township’s tax base while representing only about 1 percent of its population, the move became a practical step toward a more connected future.

What This Means for Seaside Park Residents

For current residents of Seaside Park, this change brings several meaningful shifts.

A more unified community
The barrier island now operates as one cohesive town.

Expanded tax base
Additional revenue to support infrastructure, services, and long term planning.

More aligned services
What was already happening informally is now fully integrated.

Long term real estate impact
A more cohesive municipality often increases desirability and buyer interest.

A stronger sense of place
This aligns with how residents already live, connected, walkable, and coastal.

A New Chapter Just in Time for Summer

With summer right around the corner, this transition comes at the perfect time. There is nothing quite like a Jersey Shore summer, early mornings on the beach, bike rides through town, and evenings that stretch a little longer by the water.

Seaside Park has always been known as the family resort, and that rhythm of summer is exactly what continues to draw people here year after year.

Events We’re Looking Forward To:

It is these simple traditions that define the rhythm of summer here, bringing residents and visitors together in a way that feels timeless.

While this transition has officially been approved, there will be a period of adjustment as everything begins to align and operate as one unified community.
